Kaitlyn

Meet 2011 Clayton High School senior Kaitlyn!

When I received her moms internet inquiry for  session I knew it was going to be a future favorite session of mine.  Why?  She wrote on her inquiry, “My daughter is pretty non-traditional.”  Photographers love to hear this!  We really do, but we also want our clients to really mean it.  As much as I love to do ‘out there’ images it is very important to me to capture the essence of who a person or family are.   And really, a great classic shot will always be amazing!

We found a cool field with some interesting pieces of equipment to use as background.  The tire ‘pillow’ rocks.

The early morning light was so pretty.

I LOVE this car and would love to do a really retro shoot with a family or couple asking this car owner if it can be moved to a cool location for it.  This is the kind of car that can be used for a ton of shoots and never get tired of it.  Kaitlyn loved it to and rocked it out.

Her eyes and the car color were a perfect match!  Are you seeing the cool green hair in these?

Then there was this cool black car!

Our 60′s biker girl shot!

Then we stopped by the cemetery for some more moody shots.

One thing I didn’t find out until after our shoot was that Kaitlyn is a writer.  She is also a font expert {or snob as she calls it}.   This is one of the shots they thought might make a good book jacket shot of the author.  Let me know when you get your book deal, girl!

Kaitlyn loves to go to small indy band concerts with her friends.  In the downtown alley shots she rocked out the concert tee.

Awesome day yesterday

Most of my day yesterday was spent with April Ladd of April Smiles Photography.  She is a newer photographer just getting started with her photography business.  She signed up for a mentoring session with me.  It was fantastic.  I love to share my knowledge with people, and she was the most receptive student I’ve ever had in anything I’ve taught in my life.  Her brain has a wonderful capacity for learning and retaining information quickly.

April has a sweet southern voice that comes along with a great personality. When I opened the door to my home to greet her it was like meeting an old friend. She was also super excited for me after learning about our miraculous spontaneous pregnancy. Her husband works a full time job and works as a volunteer fire fighter. They have an adorable 3 year old son too. She has dedicated herself to learning as much as she can in the short time since she purchased her DSLR camera. I think this dedication will serve her well in his dream of building a successful photography business allowing her to stay home with her child and provide an income for her family. So many of us {me included} want to make sure we are taking care of our families needs both emotionally and financially as pursue the dream of making a living with our art.

Our shoot was so much fun.  Here are a three images April took of our adorable baby model, Ryan and his parents.  Urban settings are so much fun with families.

Ryan showing off his adorable naked self.  He was great.  It was so funny trying to get his attention.  He was either fully engaged with us or fully ignoring us.  I’ve never seen a baby quite like him.  He also has the coolest hair.  The ends are darker then the roots!

The warehouse we got permission to shoot in was pretty cool.  There were these large skylights we used to create a moody couple shot.

All their loving feelings definitely shine through on this image.

I can’t wait to see what other new things April shows off.

Here are a few of my images from our shoot.    I love this blanket for its heirloom qualities.  They will no doubt still have this blanket in 20 years and still have an image from this shoot featured in their home.  Family items like this make excellent props in a shoot.

Ryan loved smiling right into the camera.  I think he’s going to be a major charmer when he grows up.

I love Allison’s face in this image.  It was taken just a fraction of a second before April’s above.  They are both perfect in their own way with her smiling at Ryan in April’s image and at her husband in this one.

This is an outtake.  I plan on showing more of these as there are often quite a few interesting or eventful moments during a shoot.  Here we had little Ryan in those cute blue undies to show off his perfect baby skin with no diaper on.  Well, you guessed it, he totally peed.  Rich is holding him out enough so that he will not get it all over more then just his arm.  With a few minutes and a few wipes we were all back to business.  :-)

One of Arpil’s requests was to work with challenging light.  We placed Allison & Rich in several places where the light would be more difficult.  This image is definitely one of my favorites from those.

Silhouettes are so much fun.  It’s easy to take a crazy bad light spot and turn it into something cool.  Her hairpiece totally works to define and give a little attitude.

I can’t wait for the next photographer who wants to do a mentoring session with me!

Wow, I didn’t know you did mentoring sessions. That’s so cool! I really love the shots you got, especially working with the difficult lighting. The outtake is pretty funny as well. My favorite is of Ryan on that blanket looking straight up into the camera. Just gorgeous!

I am so thrilled for you with your spontaneous pregnancy. What an amazing miracle!

2011 West Johnston senior Allix

Before I get to the beautiful Allix’s images, I wanted to share the shock Guy & I got this morning.  We found out we are somehow miraculously pregnant with no fertility treatments.  It is still super early, but I’ve never been one to keep big news to myself.

Allix was a lot of fun to work with.  The look she really wanted was to be in a green farm like setting.  My neighbor has a gorgeous farm with perfectly weathered buildings and a gigantic oak tree.  He gave us permission to shoot there capturing the look Allix and her mom wanted.  Enjoy the images.

What a fantastic smile Allix has.

A favorite.  Its like she is looking to the future.

The light was perfect right here.

Simple and elegant.

Gotta capture the cheer uniform.

The farm had so many cool spots with great light.

This might be my new favorite spot in a field across from the farm.  So often with fields there are either crops or animals.  This one doesn’t have either making it easy to utilize without having to avoid crops or animal bombs.

Her eyes speak volumes.

My original thought for this image was a silhouette under a gazebo with a pond in the background.  The pond wasn’t available so we went to this field with a cool gate.  It worked perfect.  It’s a little moody and gorgeous.  The whole series also includes a super cute smiley shot at the camera.

If you have known me for any length of time you know I love love love to photograph people in weeds.  They come out amazing in images.  Here is Allix among super tall weeds that seem like airy feathers around her.

Right now is a great time to book your 2011 senior or family session.  Contact Shannon to schedule.

A few weeks ago I was the second shooter at a wedding.  It was so strange meeting the bride for the first time at the event.  With the relationship building I do prior to a shoot it’s more like meeting an old friend to share a special day with her when I show up to my booked weddings.  The photographer I shot with is a great friend and it was such a fun experience.  She is as passionate about photography as I am.   We both enjoyed seeing how others work and there was almost no need to communicate what the other was doing.  We just jelled together.  She was also so sweet to bring me a sandwich, fresh fruit and cold water to snack on.

Yellow beauty

The bride and groom both asked their children to be their bridesmaids and groomsmen.  After all, it was the children who got to know each other first bringing the two love birds together.  Here are the boys.

The groomsmen

They were both so happy.

Happy moment

I love coming up with different ways to photograph the rings at weddings.  This time a simple hand holding them was perfection.

Coming together

The large gathering of family and friends making their way from the chapel to the hall for the reception as they were reviewing the wedding ceremony, chatting and laughing.

The crowd

I often get funny ideas by looking around at what is available.  These masks just happened to be on a shelf in the girls dressing room.  The bridesmaids giggled, decided which one they wanted and we got a fun shot.  The youngest of the three pictured here is also interested in photography.

The Bridesmaids

I think the grooms family is the most open to sharing emotion I have ever met.  The groom had so many special teary moments with his brothers and sisters.  This image is just one of the many we had the opportunity to capture.

Family moment

Special thanks to my friend, Tammy, of Tammy Fisher Photography for asking me to be her special shooter at this wonderful wedding.

Almost ready!

The new website that integrates everything together is almost ready to launch!  A few of my recently booked senior sessions have already used the new forms, and they are fantastic.  The ease of use for both clients and my end is a dream.

There will probably be an outage of both the website and our emails for a couple of days this next week.  This blog will continue working and you will be directed to the new address once everything is live.  Please call during the outage.  919-585-6433.

Blake and Madison have taken over the bed after their shower, and they are busy checking out Blake’s hurt finger. He stuck it where it shouldn’t have been in the eliptical machine. The machine bit with two long ragged, but shallow, gouges along the inside of his finger along with a ‘pocket’ of skin along the side of it.

Shannon - August 18, 2010 - 5:47 pm

I was able to bring all the posts from the old blog over to the new site! You are in the right place.
