Fun fun family!

I just realized it has been a long long time since I blogged a session with more then a picture or two!   Today is going to be a share of a great family we know in Miami.

With our latest trip to Miami we booked two parts for this family.  There was a private photography class for mom and dad who each have a DSLR camera.  Chris was very active with his film camera years ago, and he is now getting into the digital world.  Kathy has been using her DSLR for a while now, and wanted to up the ante with her skills and knowledge.  We had a great time meeting the morning before Thanksgiving for the private class. We also included some digital editing at the end to help Kathy get the pop and sharpness digital images need.

On the Saturday after Thanksgiving Guy dropped me off at their house for a family session.  Kathy said she wanted some relaxed family images of them having fun and interacting with each other.   That’s exactly what we got along with some fabulous individuals.

Meet Buddy.   He is top dog in this household.  Everyone loves him and he is getting to an age where everyone is already dreading the day he will not be with everyone any longer.

He loved being part of the family images.

And he is truly mans best friend in this house!

We got all these family moments of togetherness.

It’s the perfect image to put on a side table or anywhere around the girls houses.

Love this moment.

Some fun girl time.  It is so amazing to be able to capture moments in time that remind people of the love and affection they share with their family.

A great one capturing the love Chris has for Buddy.

Love the smiles.

Talk about mom and dad kissing makes everyone laugh.

Kathy and Chris have both made sure to tell me how much all the family LOVES all the images from our session.

The girls were messing around with the scarf on her head & I got this great image that looks perfect all dressed up with antique textures and an old B&W finish.

Cool dress.

Garden of Eden, right?  Yes, and it’s one we all love.  There were some showing that she does have a strapless dress on, but this one was just the best shot!

My 365 project

I’ve been taking images for my 365 project again.  It’s such an amazing thing.  I’m thinking, though, that I might move posting those images over to my personal blog.  Or maybe I’ll post them on both since they don’t have the same readers.  Any thoughts?

On December 1st we went to see Harry Potter!  The kids had no problem sitting through it with only one trip to the potty in 2 1/2 hours.  If you haven’t known me long, it’s important to note we have a Harry Potter connection.  Just after becoming engaged we saw a preview for the movie which was to come out on our wedding day.  We joked for so long about seeing the movie on our wedding we decided to make it a reality.  We had a private immediate family {not all could attend} ceremony, went out to dinner as a group and then attended the movie before heading to our hotel.  The next day we had a reception at my moms house then headed off for a week at Disneyland and Vegas before having a second reception in Utah with the rest of Guy’s family.  We think it’s quite funny and ironic that of all the shows and movies we watch the kids have a special connection to Harry Potter as well.  As the credits started at the end of the movie Blake got up and announced loudly, “It’s over people, time to go, it was a Great movie.”

Our Christmas tree is filled with some very old family ornaments and a few pretty ornaments to make the tree come together.  Each year it is wonderful to hang all of these memories both old and new.  The finished tree was waiting for us when we arrived home from our trip to Miami.  All of us have enjoyed the lit tree each evening since returning home.

Blake is so affectionate.  The only time we could schedule a friend trade session for her to get her Christmas cards back in time for sending out was a day and time Guy wasn’t available to watch the kids.  My kids tagged along.  The kids all had a great time playing when we were between shots and when we finished.  Blake was sitting with Adam and spontaneously got up to kiss him on the cheek.  He reminds us all the time to be more affectionate and appreciate each other.

We had a great early first snow on Saturday.  The day was filled with family, a great 2011 Senior session, good naps, a bounce house birthday party, their first trip to a real toy store and going out to dinner.  On our way out of the party the kids explored the snow, retaining a death grip on their gift bags, and Guy showed them how fun throwing snow balls is.  Blake’s pants show the snowball that hit him and Maddie is being hit by a snowball in this image.  I love their faces.

Awesome day yesterday

Most of my day yesterday was spent with April Ladd of April Smiles Photography.  She is a newer photographer just getting started with her photography business.  She signed up for a mentoring session with me.  It was fantastic.  I love to share my knowledge with people, and she was the most receptive student I’ve ever had in anything I’ve taught in my life.  Her brain has a wonderful capacity for learning and retaining information quickly.

April has a sweet southern voice that comes along with a great personality. When I opened the door to my home to greet her it was like meeting an old friend. She was also super excited for me after learning about our miraculous spontaneous pregnancy. Her husband works a full time job and works as a volunteer fire fighter. They have an adorable 3 year old son too. She has dedicated herself to learning as much as she can in the short time since she purchased her DSLR camera. I think this dedication will serve her well in his dream of building a successful photography business allowing her to stay home with her child and provide an income for her family. So many of us {me included} want to make sure we are taking care of our families needs both emotionally and financially as pursue the dream of making a living with our art.

Our shoot was so much fun.  Here are a three images April took of our adorable baby model, Ryan and his parents.  Urban settings are so much fun with families.

Ryan showing off his adorable naked self.  He was great.  It was so funny trying to get his attention.  He was either fully engaged with us or fully ignoring us.  I’ve never seen a baby quite like him.  He also has the coolest hair.  The ends are darker then the roots!

The warehouse we got permission to shoot in was pretty cool.  There were these large skylights we used to create a moody couple shot.

All their loving feelings definitely shine through on this image.

I can’t wait to see what other new things April shows off.

Here are a few of my images from our shoot.    I love this blanket for its heirloom qualities.  They will no doubt still have this blanket in 20 years and still have an image from this shoot featured in their home.  Family items like this make excellent props in a shoot.

Ryan loved smiling right into the camera.  I think he’s going to be a major charmer when he grows up.

I love Allison’s face in this image.  It was taken just a fraction of a second before April’s above.  They are both perfect in their own way with her smiling at Ryan in April’s image and at her husband in this one.

This is an outtake.  I plan on showing more of these as there are often quite a few interesting or eventful moments during a shoot.  Here we had little Ryan in those cute blue undies to show off his perfect baby skin with no diaper on.  Well, you guessed it, he totally peed.  Rich is holding him out enough so that he will not get it all over more then just his arm.  With a few minutes and a few wipes we were all back to business.  :-)

One of Arpil’s requests was to work with challenging light.  We placed Allison & Rich in several places where the light would be more difficult.  This image is definitely one of my favorites from those.

Silhouettes are so much fun.  It’s easy to take a crazy bad light spot and turn it into something cool.  Her hairpiece totally works to define and give a little attitude.

I can’t wait for the next photographer who wants to do a mentoring session with me!
